-when did the event happen?
-where did it happen?
-what crustal plate movement are linked to the event?
-what was the magnitude of the event?
An earthquake of a magnitude of 6.3 hit the region of Abruzzo, in the central of Italy. This deadly earthquake happened in 6 April 2009, at approximately 3:32 am local time. It was caused by movement on a North West-South East trending normal fault. Although Italy lies in a tectonically complex region, the central part of the Apennines has been characterised by extensional tectonics. The extension is due to the back-arc( the area behind an island) basin in the Tyrrhenian Sea opening faster than the African Plate thus colliding with the Eurasian plate.
-what was the impact and the extent of damaged caused as a result of the event?
The capital of Abruzzo, together with surrounding village suffered the most damage. Several thousands of people suffered foreshocks and after shocks. the powerful earthquake shook a mountain region, severely damaging a historic city and leaving hundreds feared trapped in rubble. 370 people are known to be dead while 1,173 people were also injured, making it the deadliest earthquake to hit Italy after the 1980 Irpinia earthquake.
-what did the government do in responds to the event?
Tens of thousands of tents, along with field kitchens and mobile hospital units, were being rushed to the region. Neighbouring countries also offered their assistance.
-your reflections: what do you think can be done to minimize such damage from such events?
I think they can introduce construction codes were introduced ensure all modern buildings could withstand tremors.
